Sit-in for the Soul of America
Today, West Virginia and Arizona community leaders and constituents will rally, march and do nonviolent civil disobedience in Charleston, WV and Tucson, AZ to demand that Senators Manchin and Sinema end the filibuster and their corrupt obstruction so we can pass legislation to save our nation. With legislation to deal with urgent crises that plague America blocked by Senators Manchin and Sinema and the filibuster, Arizona and West Virginia leaders are coming together to reignite and escalate the fight to end their obstruction. Hundreds of concerned West Virginians and Arizonans will take action, with dozens committed to risk arrest in nonviolent civil disobedience, including prominent community leaders and clergy.
The actions come just days after Republicans, joined by Manchin, filibustered a bill to codify Roe v. Wade and with another filibuster of a gun safety and domestic terrorism bill with majority support expected within weeks. Meanwhile, Manchin and Sinema continue to block passage of a budget reconciliation bill that could circumvent the filibuster and address climate, child care, poverty, prescription drug pricing, and many other serious issues.

We stand at a crossroads in the history of our nation and the world. Our climate is in chaos, democracy is under assault at home and abroad, fundamental rights are at risk, and working families of every color and creed whose sacrifice carried our nation through the pandemic struggle still while the fortunes of the wealthy few explode.
A majority of American voters elected a Democratic President, House, and Senate to solve these crises. But the senior Senators of two states, Arizona and West Virginia –– just two members of a 50 seat majority — are standing with the party of January 6th to block the change we so desperately need. Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin are protecting an abused, outdated Senate rule — the filibuster — and the profits of their corporate donors over our people, our democracy, and our planet.
With the recently leaked impending Supreme Court decision striking down Roe v. Wade and the horrific act of white supremacist terrorism in Buffalo, the urgency of removing the minority veto filibuster is greater than ever. There are at least 50 Senators committed to passing legislation to protect women’s right to choose across our nation and common sense gun safety legislation — only the filibuster stands in the way.
Now Arizonans and West Virginians are coming together in their states to say, “No more!” They are bringing together people from all the movements that are being blocked by the filibuster to fight in unity to bring down the common barrier to achieving all of their missions. They are escalating the struggle to demand that Sinema and Manchin stop their obstruction and end the filibuster so the majority can finally pass legislation to deal with the urgent crises that plague our nation. In the great American tradition of Indigenous leaders, Dr. King, John Lewis, Cesar Chavez, the suffragettes, sit down strikers, and other freedom struggles, they are using nonviolent direct action to try to create a moral and political crisis that forces change.
Many of the leaders and organizations who are organizing this Sit-In to Save America led separate efforts to challenge Sinema and Manchin in the last year, including two sit-ins at Sinema’s Phoenix office in June and July of 2021 organized through the Arizona Coalition to End the Filibuster and an MLK Day sit-in challenging Manchin in Charleston in January of this year. Now they say they’re joining together to escalate the fight in both states.
