News Release

The Washington football team’s decision to retire its racist name and logo is a seismic victory for Indian Country! We stand on the shoulders of so many who fought over decades for this change.

We thank all the advocates, past and present who have fought for this change. We would like to give special recognition to Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee), Amanda Blackhorse (Diné), Charlene Teters (Spokane), National Congress of American Indians, Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, First Peoples Worldwide, Not Your Mascots, and Change the Mascot to name a few.

We’re grateful for the groundbreaking work of researchers like Dr. Stephanie Fryberg (Tulalip) of the University of Michigan and Dr. Arianne Eason of the University of California-Berkeley. Their work on illuminating the deep harmful impacts of mascots on our children, and their study showing Native opposition to racist mascots, cut through the false arguments of the franchise.

We also thank the 1500+ signatories and over 100 Native-led organizations who signed the letter demanding the NFL remove Native mascots and imagery.

Yesterday we celebrated, but today our fight continues.

Racist imagery persists both at the professional sports level and in K-12 schools across the nation. Over 2,000 high school team mascots are associated with racist Native imagery including Warriors, Indians, Raiders, Braves, Chiefs/Chieftains, Specific Tribal names, and R*DSK*NS.

We need your continued support to abolish ALL racist mascots! Together, we have ended the use of a racist slur. Now, we can build a wave of action to abolish all racist mascots — but we need your help.

Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, share our social media graphics found here, and these amazing anti-racist GIFs, support us by donating so that we can continue this important work.
