University of Missouri’s Indigenous student group searching for a Native artist
Four Directions: Indigenous Peoples and Allies, University of Missouri
Four Directions: Indigenous Peoples and Allies is the Indigenous student group at the University of Missouri. Our organization works towards creating an Indigenous community on campus as well as advocating for the political, cultural, and social concerns of Native students and faculty.
Four Directions is currently working towards creating a canvas mural on our campus. We are on the search for Indigenous artists across the United States.
We want this mural to:
- Honor the Native lands which our university is currently on.
- Amplify the voices of Indigenous students and faculty.
- Serve as a symbol of Indigenous presence on campus.
- Show prospective Native students and faculty that they have a home at our campus.

This mural will be promptly hung in the Mizzou Student Center. The space allotted for the mural to be created is about a 15x15 ft. (225 sq. ft.) space. Due to the size of the mural, we have decided that the area will consist of a 5x5 ft canvas grid within the space.
We have a basic idea of what we would like to mural to look like but are open to change if our artists have ideas that help towards our goals. Our organization concluded that we wanted to see the state of Missouri 'Indigenized' with seven different sections representing the seven different tribes (Chickasaw, Illini, Ioway, Otoe, Missouria, Osage, and Quapaw) that lived in the area prior to being relocated. We would also like to have black and gold, the University of Missouri's school colors, incorporated into the piece.
