Office of Senator Martin Quezada (D-AZ-29)
PHOENIX–Senator Martin Quezada released the following statement after witnessing the shooting that occurred at Westgate Mall in Glendale, Arizona on May 20, 2020.
“Last night I witnessed people’s lives forever changed by a senseless mass shooting in my own neighborhood. I am beyond horrified by what I saw with my own eyes. It’s an experience no one should ever have to go through and I will never forget what I saw. This is the last thing our community needs in an already difficult time. I’m grieving for the victims and their loved ones and I hope and pray they will be OK.
I want to extend my gratitude and thanks to all Glendale police and first responders for their help and professionalism. This shouldn't be happening in our community. This isn’t normal. Civilians should not have access to these types of weapons and be able to walk into a mall to destroy people’s lives in a matter of seconds.
This is one more example of the senseless gun violence that happens in our country everyday. We have a responsibility to have a real discussion about policies that will ensure all of our communities are safer. These are painful times we are living through, and I love our community. Glendale is my home and we will get through this together because we are Glendale strong.”
