Office of Representative Sharice Davids (D-KS-03)

Last night, Representative Sharice Davids voted to pass H.R. 3239, the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Custody Act, which would establish basic humanitarian standards of care for individuals in CBP custody.

“The horrific conditions at the border do not reflect the values we hold as Kansans or as Americans. We must continue to address this crisis, keep children safe, and ensure accountability. This legislation will set medical care and humanitarian standards for detained individuals, including families and children, in a matter than respects the basic rights of those seeking asylum and is consistent with our country’s values. I’m proud to support this bill and I urge the Senate to act swiftly and get this bill to the President’s desk,” said Davids.

The bill includes provisions to provide for health screenings, establish standards for shelters, and create water, sanitation, nutrition and hygiene standards.

“Families belong together. This Administrations’ policies of separating children and families and keeping them in detention centers with little access to basic necessities is needlessly cruel and wrong. The House is working to hold this Administration accountable and end these inhumane policies,” said Davids.
