Trump administration violating Mashpee Wampanoag's ancestral right to tribal lands which they have inhabited for millennia

News Release

Office of Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ-07)

Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Chair of the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States, issued the following statement in response to an announcement that the Trump Administration will "disestablish" the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and take its land out of trust:

"The Trump Administration's decision is beyond cruel," Gallego said. "While Mashpee is preparing to respond to a global pandemic, Trump is violating their ancestral right to tribal lands which they have inhabited for millennia. The decision not only severely obstructs their investments in education and economic development but it makes clear that the Trump Administration is prepared to violate any Tribal government's sovereignty. The Senate must immediately pass Representative Keating's legislation to protect Mashpee's lands once and for all and to send a clear message to Indian Country that Congress will uphold its tribal trust responsibilities."
