News Release

Office of Representative-elect Deb Haaland

Representative-elect Deb Haaland released the following statement in response to being elected as the Freshman Class Representative to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, House Democratic Region VI Whip (Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona) and appointed as Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus:

“I'm excited to take on the challenge of representing a historic freshman class on the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. I am also honored to have been elected House Democratic Region VI Whip and appointed Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“Having a seat at the table comes with a great responsibility to not only advocate for my colleagues -- a group more diverse and more bold than ever before -- but also to ensure our work reflects the rich diversity of the communities we represent. Our districts are counting on us to deliver on the promise of holding Trump accountable and enacting a bold agenda that will ensure the people’s voice is heard in the halls of power."

Deb Haaland is a 35th generation New Mexican who is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, and also has Jemez Pueblo heritage. Deb grew up in a military family; her father was a 30-year combat Marine who was awarded the Silver Star Medal for saving six lives during Vietnam, and her mother is a Navy veteran who was a federal employee for 25 years in Indian education. Deb’s family moved throughout the country during her father’s military service; as a result, she attended 13 different public schools. She knows the sacrifices made by military families.

Deb is a single mother who volunteered at her daughter's pre-school in order to afford an early childhood education. Like so many New Mexicans, Deb had to rely on food stamps at times as a single parent. She has been a small-business owner. Deb has lived paycheck-to-paycheck and struggled to put herself through college and law school — but she did it through hard work and determination. Like so many New Mexicans, both Deb and her daughter are still paying off student loans.

Deb ran for Congress because she’s lived the struggles of everyday New Mexicans. She understands their needs and is best equipped to be our families’ fiercest advocate in Congress. She will fight tirelessly to create opportunities and improve livelihoods for all New Mexicans.

Gotta to keep the "orderlies" in line with over DNC platform party objectives for election Year 2020........the "fighting" is only contingent on how well Deb Haaland can demonstrate to Pelosi Leadership......she obeys, listens, sits-down, rolls-over ("here have another treat"!)
