How to request and return an absentee ballot

Voters affected by the fires may cast an absentee ballot if they are unable to vote in person in their county during Early Voting or on Election Day. For some displaced voters, voting by mail with an absentee ballot may be your only way to participate in the 2022 Primary Election.

You have multiple ways to obtain an absentee ballot:

  • Visit NMVOTE.ORG to request an absentee ballot and have it sent to wherever you are residing, even if you are currently at an evacuation center or in another state.

Contact your County Clerk to request an absentee ballot.

  • Voters who have received an absentee ballot and filled it out can return it by: Dropping off your completed ballot at any mailbox.
  • Dropping off your completed ballot to your County Clerk's office.
  • Dropping off your completed ballot at any Early Voting polling location in the county where you're registered to vote.
  • Dropping off your completed ballot at any Election Day polling location in the county where you're registered to vote no later than 7:00 PM on Primary Election Day.

Important information to remember for voting by absentee ballot:

  • You can have an absentee ballot sent to wherever you are residing, even if that is in another city, county, state, evacuation center, etc.
  • Your ballot will be for the offices and questions for the New Mexico county in which you're registered to vote, no matter where you have chosen to receive your absentee ballot. When you complete your absentee ballot, be sure to follow all instructions on the envelope for how to return it. REMEMBER to include your voter registration address on the return envelope (not the address at which you are currently residing).
  • June 2, 2022 is the last day to request an absentee ballot.

Information for emergency responders

  • Firefighters and other emergency responders in New Mexico who have been combating the fires are eligible to apply for an absentee ballot and then transmit it by facsimile or scanned document to your County Clerk.
  • If you do this, you must sign and transmit a waiver of secrecy form that will be provided by the County Clerk.

Important dates and deadlines

  • Thursday, June 2 | Last Day to Request an Absentee Ballot
  • Saturday, June 4 | Early Voting Ends
  • Tuesday, June 7 | Primary Election Day
