Office of the Ontario Regional Chief
Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald welcomes the creation of the First Nations Economic Growth and Prosperity Table that will build upon the positive and growing relationship we currently have with the Government of Ontario.
“The Table will create a space for First Nations’ meaningful participation in the post pandemic economic recovery in Ontario by supporting our Indigenous economies so they can thrive and be successful on a local, regional, national and global level. In the long term, this will help us meet our mutual goal of creating healthy and vibrant communities,” said Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald.
The Table will formalize political processes related to economic recovery, growth, and prosperity within First Nations in Ontario and their surrounding economies by fostering economic partnerships with industry, capital pools, private sector businesses, and municipalities.
A key objective is to work in partnership with the Government of Ontario to establish three economic growth and prosperity funds: (a) Economic Capacity Fund, (b) Building Bridges Entrepreneurial Fund, and (c) First Nations Partnerships Fund. This component of the Prosperity Table is in response to calls from the Chiefs-in-Assembly by resolution to promote government investments that support business development and ensure economically sustainable First Nation communities in Ontario.
The Table will be guided by a Chiefs Committee on Economic Prosperity that will support First Nations and regional organizations in their work to protect First Nation Aboriginal and Treaty Rights while providing recommendations and strategies toward economic growth and prosperity.
“This bi-lateral Table on economic growth is the first of its kind with the Ontario government. Our goal is to support First Nation businesses and create jobs that will help move First Nations people and communities away from dependency to towards self-sufficiency. Ultimately, if we do this right, this Table is going to make First Nations a substantial part of the Ontario, Canadian and global economy.”
