Heidi Heitkamp: Lack of action and abdication of leadership by President Trump and Senate Republicans proves their utter callousness in the face of loss of life and livelihoods

News Release

One Country Project

One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the October jobs report:

“As the fiscal support provided through the CARES Act dries up, the continued slowdown of the economic recovery suggests Congress ought to do more, not less, to help ensure economic buoyancy for American families,” said One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp. “Even as the economy adds jobs, it has only regained about half of the 22 million jobs lost since March. Yesterday, for the second day in a row, over 100,000 coronavirus cases were recorded in the United States. Yet Republicans in Congress dig in their heels and refuse to pass an additional relief package to shore up American workers and small businesses.

“It is time for Republican leadership to stop pretending the pandemic and economy are unrelated and independent of one another – they are intrinsically linked. Perhaps if Mitch McConnell listened more to scientists and Fed Chair Jerome Powell, and less to the president’s tweets, we would be on our way to true economic recovery.

“This lack of action and abdication of leadership by President Trump and Senate Republicans does not prove their fiscal conservatism – it proves their utter callousness in the face of loss of life and livelihoods. Working Americans need relief. COVID-19 is not going away. The slowing pace of job growth is proof of that.”
