Historically high unemployment persists despite jobs gains

News Release

One Country Project

One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the June jobs report:

“President Trump has pounced on the surge in job creation and tweeted that he is creating the best economy in history despite the pandemic. Meanwhile, in the real world, millions of hardworking Americans remain out of a job and many fear that upcoming reclosures put their jobs in jeopardy.

“The Trump economy is built on a weak foundation. We cannot forget that manufacturing, which Trump promised to singlehandedly save, faced its first contraction since the Great Recession during his presidency. Farmers, who were doing poorly before the pandemic and were only kept afloat due to billions in farm aid, are again at the mercy of an administration devoid of competent leadership. The president hopes that keeping the money flowing to specific sectors will keep his reelection hopes alive.

“We know the president’s response to the pandemic has been inadequate. That is indisputable. We know his only strategy is closing his eyes, plugging his ears, and clicking his heels three times to bring back the American economy. Unfortunately for the president, he cannot wish the pandemic away. Bringing stable jobs back to rural America will require addressing the underlying public health issues causing the economic crisis we have found ourselves in. The president cannot ‘cheerlead’ his way out of this.”
