One Country Project

One Country Project Chair Heidi Heitkamp released the following statement in response to President Trump’s incitement of rioters that stormed the Capitol building to delay the peaceful transition of power:

“We knew this day would come. The invasion of the U.S. Capitol building by radical insurgents is the natural conclusion to a months’ long assault on American democracy, carried out unflinchingly by President Trump, his administration, and his collaborators in Congress.

“President Trump’s message to his rebellious mob doubled down on the lie that the election was stolen from him. Even in this dark chapter of our republic, he places his make-believe grievance at the center of the narrative. To my former Senate colleagues who have stood by the president despite all the signs that his deranged and unlawful behavior would lead to this moment I ask: Will you continue to stand idly by, to enable and propagate the destruction of our democratic institutions? Will you continue to be cowed by the president and his mob, or will you stand strong for the country you profess to hold so dear and ensure democracy prevails? Enough is enough. The U.S. Senate must stand firm in the face of sedition and complete the certification of Electoral College ballots. Complete the count.

“This coup will fail and those responsible must be held accountable.”
