November is National Family Caregivers Month. If you care for a parent, spouse, friend, or relative, then you are a caregiver. American Indian and Alaska Native people are more likely to be caregivers than other groups. Caregiving for people with dementia and other progressive memory issues is known to take an emotional toll on the caregiver. It is important for caregivers to take care of their own mental, spiritual, social, and physical well-being. Below are some things that may help you along the journey of caregiving.
Tips for Native Family Caregivers:
- Seek “respite care” – ask for help so you can take a break
- Maintain your sense of self by doing things that help you feel good.
- Stay connected to your spirituality and culture.
- Eat well & create a routine to get restful sleep.
- Set personal health goals.
- Stay in touch with family and friends.
- Find a community of other caregivers in local or virtual support groups.
How Can You Support Native Family Caregivers?
- Recognize their value – see them.
- Assist by offering help or respite care.
- Include them in your community.
- Support their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
- Engage them and the person they are caring for in family and cultural events.
