State of New Mexico Indian Affairs Department

New Mexico Indian Affairs Department Cabinet Secretary Lynn Trujillo on Wednesday commended Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for signing into law Senate Bill 1/House Bill 5 - Public Education Changes, and House Bill 589 - Community School, Early Childhood & Pre-K. These bills will expand learning programs, provide additional resources for youth with the highest needs, and increase pay for the state’s public-school teachers.

Senate Bill 1/House Bill 5 makes changes to the public-school funding formula to provide support for extended-learning programs for students, educational interventions for at-risk students and school administration services.

House Bill 589 creates a framework to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate curriculum to our students. “We have seen our Indian students thrive at community-based schools where culture and language programs are emphasized and supported,” Secretary Trujillo said. “House Bill 589 encourages these types of schools and programs, as well as increased community engagement.”
