News Release

International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Amnesty International, and the lead prosecutor in the original trial against Leonard Peltier have been calling for the immediate release of Leonard after his 47-year imprisonment. The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee is calling for President Joe Biden to immediately release Peltier from prison, and is stopping in Sacramento during their journey to call for the city’s solidarity, similar to the recent declaration made by the city of San Francisco.

For the last 45 years, activist and Elder Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned after what Amnesty International named as one of the most corrupt trials in US history. The unjust incarceration has been exacerbated recently by Elder Peltier’s health issues, further complicated by a recent case of COVID.

Peltier was convicted after allegedly shooting two FBI agents during a raid of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. A raid that occurred during a time of great oppression against Indigenous Nations.

“The unjust incarceration of our warrior Leonard Peltier is a continued ‘war’ against sovereign nations everywhere! Now is the time for the United States to right their wrongs against our Indigenous Nations. Tell the truth, and send our warrior home.”

- Jean Roach, Board Member of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

Join us in getting the message out to President Biden, and those watching. The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, supporters and local Native American community members will gather at the following:

West steps of the California State Capitol 1315 10th Street Sacramento, California 95814 at 1 p.m.

“We have confirmation from the US prosecuting attorney‘s office that they theorized every aspect of this case and are now asking for his release. Leonard Peltier is 77 years old with multiple comorbidities and post COVID effects. And, as a result, this has become an emergent situation. More than 250 legislators have signed letters to the president for his release.”

- Carol GoKee, Co-Director of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

The United States government, and President Joe Biden in particular, has the opportunity to right one of the most erroneous cases of injustice in recent history. A small but important step toward the healing of our nations. We are calling on you, the press, to ensure that you are able to be a part of history.
