New Mexico will celebrate its first statewide Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 14, 2019. The celebration is open to the public – all are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Inaugural Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration, hosted by the tribes of New Mexico and held at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, will feature an invocation, a tribal entry parade, artist vendors, Native dances from a variety of New Mexico tribes, dignitaries and speakers, and Native-inspired food. The invocation will be conducted by several Tribal leaders in unison in their Native languages. Traditional festive attire is encouraged for guests identifying as Indigenous attending the event and/or participating in the parade.
“This statewide holiday signifies how Native Americans and Indigenous communities are a crucial part of New Mexico’s past, present and future,” said sponsor of the legislation, State Representative Derrick Lente (Sandia, Isleta). “The day is an act of restorative justice for our Indigenous communities and people, and a time to reflect on our understanding of our country’s complex history. New Mexico’s Nations, Tribes, Pueblos and all who identify as Indigenous are what make New Mexico the Land of Enchantment.”
