Students will learn about contemporary Indigenous changemakers

In partnership with Amplifyer, we are excited to launch a new lesson plan and artwork series for educators featuring 6 contemporary Native changemakers and their many important contributions to this country.

72% of Americans almost never encounter or seek out information about Native Americans. 87% of state history standards don’t mention Native American history after the 1900’s and 27 states make no mention of a single Native American in K-12 curriculum. Despite these statistics, 78% of Americans are interested in learning more about Native peoples and 72% of Americans support significant changes to K-12 curricula to improve education about Native Americans past and present. Lack of knowledge and information means that Native people are being erased from modern society and are being made invisible. 

One way to change the system is from the inside out! Through the artwork and lesson plans, students will learn about contemporary Indigenous changemakers fighting against invisibility and their many important contributions to this country!

The series will feature images of Bethany Yellowtail (Apsaalooke & Northern Cheyenne), Founder of B. Yellowtail and Fashion Designer, Aaron Yazzie (Diné), NASA Engineer, and Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota), Olympic Gold Medalist, and more created by Native artist and fashion designer Jared Yazzie @oxdxclothing (Diné).

The series will also feature images of Joy Harjo (Mvskoke), the first Native U.S. Poet Laureate, and Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne & Hodulgee Muscogee), a Native rights advocate, poet, writer and curator and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, by Native Artist Bunky Echo-Hawk @bunkhaus (Pawnee, Yakima) and an image of Sarah Teller Ornelas (Diné), TV Writer and Producer by Native Artist Gregg Deal @greggdeal (Pyramid Lake Paiute).
