Two years ago, the largest public opinion research ever conducted about Native peoples was released. Reclaiming Native Truth (RNT), co-led by our founder Crystal Echo Hawk, fueled the movement that led to IllumiNative. IllumiNative was created to shine light on the strengths, contributions, and resilience of Native peoples to disrupt invisibility and dispel the toxic misconceptions about us.
On our second birthday, we reflect on how we’ve grown. With your support we:
- Fought for accurate and increased Native representation in pop culture by producing a history-making film celebrating the career of Cherokee actor Wes Studi for his honorary Oscar award, hosted groundbreaking events at Sundance Film Festival that centered Native talent, and partnered with The Black List and Sundance Institute to establish the inaugural Indigenous List to showcase Indigenous screenwriters.
- Launched campaigns to amplify Native voices and issues including our #TheTimeisNow campaign to end racist imagery in sports, elevating the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 through our Warrior Up campaign, and conducting the first survey in Indian Country that provides an opportunity for all Native peoples to be a part of shaping our future – the Indigenous Futures Project.
- Mobilized action and created resources to celebrate the accomplishments of contemporary Native people through the Native youth-led Native Now initiative, Indigenous Peoples Day Toolkit, and our stand to remind the president that Native history is American history.
We’ve grown a lot in the last two years and we look forward to the year ahead but this historic time demands historic action. From all of us.
As we ramp up our efforts for Native peoples to be seen, heard, valued, and included during this pivotal election year and a watershed moment for racial equity, we need your support. If you believe in our work, donate today.
