Hawaiian Lending & Investments
The nonprofit Hawaiian Lending & Investments (HLI) received certification this month as a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Housing Counseling Agency dedicated to families on Hawaiian Home Lands statewide.
“Congratulations to our Hawaiian Lending & Investments team for this incredible accomplishment,” said Faisha Solomon, Hawaiian Lending & Investments Board Chairwoman. “Mahalo to the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations (SCHHA) for envisioning Hawaiian Lending & Investments back in 2018 to serve the needs of Hawaiian families with our unique expertise on homestead trust lands.”
Hawaiian Lending & Investments is a community development financial institution (CDFI) under the U.S. Treasury Community Development Financial Institution Fund program, delivering loans, grants and technical assistance to raise the economic prosperity of homestead households and mercantile businesses across the state.
This month, Hawaiian Lending & Investments added formal U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certification as a housing counseling agency for its work in homeownership post and pre-purchase training, foreclosure prevention, and assisting families to qualify for mortgages and refinances. In addition, Hawaiian Lending & Investments has been accepted into a national Native Housing Counseling Intermediary with a direct funding relationship with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) operated by the national intermediary, the Oweesta Corporation.
“This achievement is powerfully important,” said Sybil Lopez, elected Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations Vice Chairwoman. “Our homestead families on the land and on the waitlist are best served by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development counseling agency that is an expert in the tenets of our Hawaiian Home Land trust law, sadly too many are not, which was the genesis of Hawaiian Lending & Investments.”
Hawaiian Lending & Investments is governed by Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations enrolled members, and operates out of offices on Oahu, Kauai and Maui. It provides consumer, housing and business loans and grants statewide, with excellent training on the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act (HHCA) dedicated to land for homes, farms, ranches and mercantile businesses for native Hawaiians and heirs or successors.
“Helping families stay in their homes by avoiding foreclosure, as well as qualifying for mortgages to buy or build, are key priorities for Hawaiian Lending & Investments,” Solomon continued. “This U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certification is wonderful validation of the Hawaiian Lending & Investments work the past 3 years in financial assistance that applies our expertise in the Hawaiian Home Land program, so needed.”
Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations pursued the establishment of Hawaiian Lending & Investments, similar to a tribal community development financial institution and counseling agency on tribal lands on the continent, to bring the expertise and passion for trust land solutions that are directly accountable to homestead and waitlist families, and elected representatives enrolled in self-governing homestead associations.
“It’s an important distinction,” said Mike Kahikina, Chairman of the Association of Hawaiians for Homestead Lands (AHHL), a statewide waitlist association and Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations member. “Hawaiian Lending & Investments is tied back to our homestead families, accountable to our homestead associations across the state – it’s the best way to advance our people, and make sure they get the best expertise on our trust lands available. Mahalo Ke Akua for this timely certification.”
