Life Without Parole

Douglas Ray Stankewitz, Monache/Cherokee, has spent 43 years in San Quentin Prison for a crime he says he didn’t commit: the carjacking and murder of 21-year-old Theresa Graybeal in Fresno, California in 1978. In 2022, his lawyers have raised another round of appeals that could give him a chance to get out of prison on parole. He spoke to Indian Country Today about his life behind bars.
