All Pueblo Council of Governors support Rep. Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior
The All Pueblo Council of Governors (APCG)
The All Pueblo Council of Governors (APCG) joins tribal leaders from across the country urging President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris to appoint Representative Deb Haaland as the nation’s first Native American to serve as cabinet secretary in the incoming administration.
Rep. Deb Haaland is an enrolled member of Laguna Pueblo and also has significant ties to Jemez Pueblo. She has led strong advocacy efforts on some of the most pressing priorities for Indigenous peoples throughout the nation and to our Pueblos collectively; including the protection of cultural landscapes at Chaco Canyon and Bears Ears National Monument, justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women, and for sustainable funding to support programs and services that protect the everyday safety and health of tribal communities and families throughout the nation.
APCG submitted a formal letter to the Biden-Harris administration last week, affirming the Pueblo’s collective support for Rep. Haaland as the appropriate person to head the Interior during this critical point in our nation’s history.
In addition to a comprehensive understanding of the Interior’s responsibilities to Tribes, she’s worked across the aisles to address economic, environmental, and racial injustice with solutions that align with proposals put forth by the Biden-Harris administration.
Her leadership would support proactive solutions for historically underserved communities, expand access to healthcare amidst the current national health crisis, and secure access to voting for millions of Americans who ensured the victory of President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris.
There would be no stronger commitment of this new administration’s promise to fully implement the “Biden-Harris Plan for Tribal Nations” and to “restore the Soul of America,” than the appointment of Representative Deb Haaland as Secretary of the Interior.
Statement from Chairman Wilfred Herrera (Governor of Laguna Pueblo), All Pueblo Council of Governors:
“Our Pueblo nations are extremely appreciative and grateful for the leadership of our New Mexican congressional champions, including Senator Udall and Senator Heinrich, who have unceasingly supported Pueblos and Tribes in successfully advancing the government-to-government relationship and for their advocacy on milestones that continue to ensure the health, safety, well-being, and cultural longevity of our nations.
Although we would be fortunate if any of the New Mexican candidates were appointed, we feel it is long past due in this nation’s history for a Native American woman to be positioned in the highest levels of government working on behalf of the communities she has participated in and served her entire life. We look forward to working in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation to continue developing a meaningful and effective nation-to-nation relationship between Pueblo nations and the Biden-Harris Administration.”
The All Pueblo Council of Governors Mission is to advocate, foster, protect and encourage the social, cultural, and traditional well-being of our Pueblo Nations. Through our inherent and sovereign rights, we will promote language, health, economic and educational advancement of all Pueblo people. For more information, please visit: https://www.apcg.org/
