November 2020 is officially American Indian Heritage Month in the state of Louisiana.
Governor John Bel Edward's signed the proclamation at the request of Baley Champagne, a tribal member of the United Houma Nation. "American Indian Heritage Month is dedicated to celebrating the culture of the American Indians of Louisiana and for generations to learn the old ways, and to take pride in the celebration of resiliency of a culture that has lost so much," says Champagne.

Baley Champagne is the founder of the First Indigenous Peoples Day in Louisiana. She is a senior in the Mass Communication program at Loyola University of New Orleans and an advocate for American Indians' civil rights and promoting inclusiveness in communities, businesses, governments and news for American Indians.
