Suspect of Fond du Lac shooting is in custody
A shooting occurred Friday morning on the Fond du Lac Reservation in Minnesota, which sent the tribal high school and offices into lockdown. The lockdowns have since been lifted.
The shooting took place inside the gymnasium attached to the Fond du Lac Head Start building where a funeral was taking place, said Derek Randall, interim police chief of the Cloquet Police Department, during an afternoon press conference.
Randall said there were no students or children at the head start at the time of the shooting.
The victim is a 45-year-old male from Minneapolis who was shot in the head. His name has not been released. His condition remains unknown but it believes to be a non-life threatening injury, Randall said.
The shooter has been identified as 28-year-old male, Shelby Gene Boswell. Boswell is also from Minneapolis and charges are pending. Boswell was found still on the scene by Fond du Lac law enforcement officers.
“Funeral goers intervened and helped restrain Mr. Boswell until law enforcement took him into custody,” Randall said during the press conference.
It is unclear if either man is a Fond du Lac tribal citizen.
The Fond du Lac Police Department did not have anyone available for comment by phone.
At least one community member, who works in Washington, D.C., was disappointed to hear of the shooting.
A funeral for a tribal citizen was about to start when the shooting happened.
Fond du Lac Tribal Chairman Kevin DuPuis Sr. said the incident disrupted an important ceremony for his tribal nation.
“The only thing I can say to that, how do you think you would feel if your community was hit with something like that? One of the most important ceremonies that our people have is a funeral,” said the chairman. “I think that covers it.”
Grief counselors and a behavioral health team will be available for community members through the weekend and can be reached at (218) 878-7101.
