The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) is deploying its Mobile Medical Unit today to assist the Santee Sioux Nation of Nebraska as it recovers from devasting floods impacting the region. The Santee Sioux Tribe’s health care clinic flooded, and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Mobile Unit will allow tribal members to receive basic health care while the clinic is cleaned up.
Two Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community staff members will accompany the Mobile Unit, which will be used by Santee clinic providers once on site. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is also providing bottled water and freeze-dried food.
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Mobile Unit was launched in 2007 as a way to provide free medical, dental and vision services to Native Americans struggling to access high-quality care in rural areas. Now in its 12th year of operation, the Mobile Unit has been deployed 600 times and served approximately 10,000 people.
