Regular meeting time, 11:15 Eastern. Let’s discuss the timing as the first item on the agenda. We need to move the meeting an hour forward or an hour later. We need to have Sky in this meeting -- and she is taking her son to school then. (The Doodle poll was inconclusive, a lot of 5 votes throughout the day.)
Wonderful event at Phoenix Indian Center’s Legacy Award last night. As I wrote on Slack: This award was for the entire Indian Country Today team. Everyone makes so many contributions every day & our readers, the greater Native community does take notice. S/Os to the Press Pool & Op-Ed “team” that is Lisa, East Coasters — Heather, Vincent, Kolby and Jourdan — Arizonans Aliyah, Tomas and Patty— and the California crew, Becca & Sky, our legal brain trust, Derrick, plus they many more who write or produce often ...) congratulations!
A personal note. There was a reception line and Gov. Stephen Lewis’ mother came up to me and said she had been wanting to talk to me for a long time. She asked, “are you Neil’s son?” My eyes teared up. I touched her arm and said yes and that he had recently passed. Turns out she went to school with him in the 1940s. Later I showed pictures and she told me stories. That was my award night.
(Plus a bonus: One of the other winners was Tristan Craig, a high school student, White Mountain and Navajo. His grandfather was the legendary performer and cartoonist Vincent Craig. I used to edit his cartoons (not that I changed many). For those who don’t know Craig’s legacy … this.
And pictures of the awards.
