Indian Country Today

On Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. ET, the world is invited to join me, the #NativeNerd, and friends that include Cowlitz writer and comedian Joey Clift, Tuscarora writer Kelly Lynne D'Angelo, Ojibwe, and company CEO and esports team founder Marty Strenczewilk as we play an online gaming session to benefit the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

How can people watch it?

People can tune in to watch the Livestream on the GenCon Twitch channel, after the news segment on Dec. 3. During the week leading up to the show and during the Livestream itself, all of GenCon’s programming will also be fundraising toward our selected charity.

Our selected charity

The IRSSS, or Indian Residential School Survivors Society, which provides services to the survivors of residential school abuse that took place during the colonization of Canada.

About Gen Con

Gen Con is the oldest and most highly attended tabletop gaming convention in North America, averaging 70,000-plus attendees each year. For five decades, GenCon has been gathering people around tables to play games. You can read more about it here:

About Coyote and Crow

“Coyote & Crow” is a sci-fi and fantasy tabletop role-playing game set in a First Nations alternate future where colonization never happened. This game is being created and led by an all-Native team. In March, “Coyote & Crow” became one of the most successful role-playing games to ever fund on Kickstarter, raising more than $1 million. Connor Alexander is the project lead and owner.

About our game host

The session, playing of a game created by “Coyote and Crow,” will be moderated by Shay Snow (they, them) @spellsinsugar on Twitter.

Well, I really enjoy “Coyote & Crow,” but I never say no to a great game of “Starfinder!”

A cool, fun, or nerdy fact about you:
I went to my first comic convention at 9 days old! My dad bundled me up and took me around while he was playing games and getting autographs! I met Adam West!

Comment on your participation:
I really love running “Coyote & Crow” and I’m excited to see how everyone reacts to it once we fully launch!

Favorite game:
It changes all the time, but at the moment I'm going to say “Dungeons & Dragons” with my friends at NDND!

A cool, fun, or nerdy fact about you:
I once faked pneumonia for two weeks in the sixth grade so that I could stay home and beat “Chrono Trigger” for the Super Nintendo.

Comment on your participation:
Any day I can play a Native-created tabletop RPG with a crew of cool Native gamers is a good day!

Favorite game:
It’s got to be “Dungeons and Dragons” for me!

A cool, fun, or nerdy fact about you:
I once directed an immersive version of “Macbeth” with a live audience in a pool at sundown, because why not.

Comment on your participation:
To know we’re playing a TTRPG that’s built by us, for us, and yet also for others… I couldn’t be more honored to play today. This is a long time coming, with so many of us involved, and the art form of oral storytelling is an extension of who we are as a people. I can’t wait for others to experience this magic.

“World of Warcraft” for video games, “MTG” if we are only talking analog.

A cool, fun, or nerdy fact about you
I co-founded an Esports team that has won championships in lots of games to include “World of Warcraft,” “League of Legends,” “Halo,” “Starcraft 2,” “SMITE,” “Marvel vs. Capcom” and “Call of Duty.”

I’m excited to support a great charity and get to play a fun nerdy game with some other awesome Natives!

A cool, fun, or nerdy fact about you
I recently spoke with “DOOM” developer John Romero (who was in Ireland) about the day he saw the 2D world of gaming turn into the 3D world of gaming because he developed the DOOM world with levels, darkened rooms and imp humanoid demons shooting fireballs. This change in coding — introduced by Romero, a Yaqui man — reshaped the world of video games forever.

Comment on your participation
I have never played this game before, but I am ready to take this on!
