Full Professor/Director Search-Northwestern’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR)

Northwestern’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible position at the rank of full professor (open-field) to begin in Fall 2023. This appointment also includes an initial three-year rotating term as Director of the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research. The Northwestern CNAIR search committee seeks applicants with distinguished academic credentials and a record of or potential for high scholarly achievement and excellence in teaching. The search committee will consider applicants from disciplines across the humanities, and environmental and social sciences, including but not limited to History, Anthropology, Sociology, Journalism, Ethnic Studies, Education, Political Science, Engineering, Law, and Medicine. Final departmental affiliations will depend upon the expertise, desires, and qualifications of the candidate.

The director will be responsible for overseeing the mission and vision of the center as it continues to work towards its goals and build research capacity, which includes developing and promoting reciprocal and sovereignty-affirming relationships and partnerships with Native American and Indigenous communities. The Director should have deep expertise in particular disciplines but also evidence of collaboration and interest in supporting and cultivating transdisciplinary approaches to scholarship. Further, we are especially interested in applicants who have demonstrated experience working at the intersections of rigorous scholarship, community partnerships, and significant impact in the world.

Candidates must hold a PhD or its equivalent in their field by the time of appointment and will be expected to teach (a varied range of undergraduate and graduate courses). Other qualifications include strong expertise in aspects of the politics, culture, and/or history of American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Indigenous peoples (globally) and federal policies and political relations, understanding of urban Indian population, substantial research, scholarship, and project experience, successful track record of leadership in higher education, and current grant support and academic service.
