The University of Oregon (UO) College of Education (COE) is organized into four academic departments and 14 research and outreach centers. All departments include both tenure and career non-tenure-track faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs addressing the full range of issues present in educational and social systems. Our faculty are devoted to inspiring and mentoring the approximately 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students in the COE who will be the next generation of educational and social science leaders. The Academic Advisor provides academic advising for current and prospective undergraduate majors and minors in the College of Education (COE), within a team setting that comprises other professional advisors. This position also serves as a Program Lead in one or more of the academic program areas but has the foundational knowledge to support all COE students. The Academic Advisor helps students develop academic plans and goals, identifies barriers to retention and degree completion, leverage available resources, and provides guidance and support as students pursue their academic goals and attain their degrees.
The Academic Advisor must be culturally competent and able to work with all populations of students including first-generation, low-income, underrepresented students such as international, transfer, LGBTQ, and students of color. The Academic Advisor must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty. The Academic Advisor must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive and equitable workplace.
This position is integral to the delivery of program services such as orientation, registration, retention, and progression. The Academic Advisor works in a fast-paced, drop-in, and appointment-based office setting delivering advising services on a year-round basis in both one-on-one and group settings. The Academic Advisor collaborates with other faculty, officers of administration, classified staff, and student employees to support COE undergraduate student advising needs. This position works externally in close cooperation with other support services on campus: Undergraduate Education and Student Success, Registrar's Office, Admissions, Financial Aid, International Affairs, and departmental offices. The Academic Advisor position reports to the Assistant Dean for Administration, Equity, and Inclusion and may receive training and additional project assignments from the Academic Program Director(s) for which the Academic Advisor serves as a Program Lead.
• Bachelor's degree.
• Two years of experience in high school, college, university, counseling, or similar setting providing academic advising, advising support, student services, career counseling, or counseling.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse students, including first-generation, underrepresented, students of color, LGBTQ, non-traditional, disadvantaged, and under-prepared individuals, as well as demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to address the needs of undergraduate students.
• Strong organizational, written, oral, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and in a team environment.
• Acute attention to detail, as is required by the nature of this work due to the liability and consequences associated with an error.
• Problem-solving ability and sound judgment with the ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
• Knowledge of computer technology and database software relating to all aspects of the advising process is important.
• Strong customer-service orientation.
• Demonstrated success in building cooperative working relationships with campus offices, faculty, alumni, and current and prospective students.
• Demonstrated potential to contribute effectively to a team of staff dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive working and learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.
• A Master's degree, awarded by the time of appointment from an accredited institution, in education, counseling, student services/student affairs, student development, higher education leadership, or related field.
• Advising experience in an integrated academic and career office in a college/university setting.
• Some experience in utilizing technology for advising purposes (e.g. podcasts, social media platforms, LinkedIn).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders and build partnerships.
• Knowledge of university systems and structures.
• Proficiency in a second language.
