Members of the Northern Arapaho Business Council continued negotiations with state officials in late August in Ethete about allowing casino gambling as a way to boost the reservation's economy. Prior efforts failed, largely because Gov. Jim Geringer has opposed expanded gambling, citing the sound defeat of a state ballot initiative in 1994. Four members met with State Auditor Max Maxfield and other officials July 24. "It was a good first meeting, and we all had our say," said Councilman Hubert Aug. 4. "I came away with a good feeling, which is in sharp contrast to the other talks we had with the state in the past." The tribe wants casino-style games for its 789 Bingo Hall south of Riverton.
