WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The trust debacle may have gotten worse.
Alan Balaran, special master serving as a watchdog on trust reform, reported to U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth on April 11 that the Department of the Interior has "utterly failed" to ensure that its employees are properly trained on how to handle Indian trust documents.
"Left unchecked, the consequences to Indian beneficiaries could prove irreversible," said Balaran in official documents.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Balaran claimed training was still lacking despite promises from senior Interior officials made three years ago.
