A video by David Corrigan of Big Island Video News posted to YouTube April 7 highlights the protests that have been taking place at Mauna Kea since March 30 in Hilo, Hawaii. It was then that protesters formed a road block outside the Mauna Kea visitors’ center to prevent construction of the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope by the University of Hawaii.

“They’re setting a shining and proud example of how we should be conducting ourselves,” Dexter Kaiama, an attorney, says of the protesters at Mauna Kea. He points out in the video that any contracts the State of Hawaii has with TMT and its companies for the proposed telescope on Mauna Kea are void. “This continues to be the Kingdom of Hawaii under international law… what we have here is continued occupation for over 117 years—illegal occupation.”
