Cherokee Elder Ollie Jean Brown, of Oklahoma, tells viewers about playing with dolls, making mud pies, and playing hide and seek. The mud pies were important: “We would decorate them,” she says in the video.

Brown says her parents couldn’t always afford store-bought toys, but one Christmas she did get one she really wanted, a Davy Crockett doll. “I just tore into that thing—I just loved him until he just fell apart,” she says.

They had no electricity, and carried water from a nearby creek. Hear more about her life in the video below:
