Members of the Northern Ute Indian Tribe plan to petition President Barack Obama for the return of the Uncompahgre Reservation. The Utes are asking to recover some 2 million acres of land near Vernal, the majority of which is public domain in Duchesne, Grand and Uintah counties. Much of the land borders Colorado on the east, Grand County on the south, the Uintah and Ouray Reservation on the west.
