A recount has confirmed Judy Knight-Frank's one-vote victory over Ernest House in the election for tribal chairman. House requested the Oct. 22 recount, which was broadcast live on Ute public television. Knight-Frank beat House 239-238 in the Oct. 12 election. Knight-Frank has served three separate three-year terms as chairwoman. House unseated her in 1998. She also served on the tribal council. In previous terms as chairwoman, Knight-Frank negotiated for the Animas-La Plata water project and worked to create state gaming pacts for the Ute casino operation. She also helped secure unemployment benefits for Ute workers. She will be sworn in on Nov. 2.
