Two area Indian tribes have expressed interest in acquiring surplus Navy properties on Aquidneck Island, a move that could upset community plans for the land. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, on behalf of the Narragansett Indian Tribe and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, has asked the Navy to extend by 60 days its deadline for filing formal requests to acquire the properties.
