In an effort to increase awareness about Domestic Violence, Nami Migizi Nangwiihgan, Domestic Violence Services of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian has provided three local football teams and three local volleyball teams with purple socks to wear during designated games in the month of October.

High school sports teams in Mt Pleasant, Michigan, including Mt. Pleasant, Shepherd, and the Beal City High School football teams, and all Mt. Pleasant volleyball teams will participate.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and purple is the color that’s been designated to help show support and bring awareness to the issue and its effects on victims and families.

The teams’ willingness to wear the color purple signifies their support to raise awareness to the issue of domestic and dating violence. It is only through the support of others that we can help victims speak out and that we as a community can help end this violence, a Saginaw Chippewa news release said.

Domestic and dating violence is a pattern of destructive behaviors used to gain power and control over an intimate/dating partner or spouse. The severity of intimate partner violence is often greater in cases where the pattern of abuse was established in adolescence. In fact, one in three adolescents in the United States is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner; a figure that exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. Additionally, one in four women is a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime, the news release said.

Nami Migizi Nangwiihgan also has a limited supply of socks to pass out to those who wish to show their support in our tribal community. The group is specifically offering them to the men who would like to break down the stigma that this is only a women’s issue. One in 55 men are victims of domestic violence, and there are dedicated men who wish to speak out on behalf of all victims.
