Tribe donates fire truck

RINCON, Calif. – A fire truck originally purchased by the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians of San Diego County was given to the Paiute Shoshone Indians, the tribe announced June 18.

The truck will be used at the Big Pine Reservation of Inyo County on the eastern Sierra Mountain Range.

“Having lost homes and suffered the devastation of two wildfires on our reservation, we are painfully aware of the need for tribes in rural communities to have their own firefighting equipment. We also know that many tribes cannot afford to buy the equipment they need,” said Rincon Vice Chairwoman Stephanie Spencer.

Rincon originally paid $100,000 for the 1985 75-foot ladder truck that has since been rebuilt and modified.

Nine Indian tribes requested firefighting equipment in rural Inyo and Mono counties.
