A measure headed to the governor's desk would allow American Indian tribes to sponsor charter schools. The state Senate on Wednesday accepted House amendments to Senate Bill 586 by Sen. John Ford, R-Bartlesville, and Rep. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa. The measure would apply only to Oklahoma and Tulsa counties, Ford said. The schools could be set up only on land held in trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
