Lack of adequate sterilization of equipment may have exposed local Native Americans to deadly infections while receiving open wound care from Indian Health Services, the Yuma Sun learned late Monday. The issue was brought to the attention of Quechan tribal members during a meeting Saturday, said Vernon Smith, former tribal administrator and a founding member of Pipa A-Koots, an organization of tribal elders.
