A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for the beating and murder of an illegal immigrant last October. The boy, a member of the tribe, was not identified. He pleaded guilty to murder as a juvenile on March 6. The U.S. Attorney's office reported the boy repeatedly beat Romualdo Morales Bravo of Chiapas, Mexico with a rock after the man asked for a ride. Two adults charged with aiding the murder are awaiting trial. Their names have not been released. Bravo, 46, was attacked on a hillside in the Village of Little Tucson on the reservation. He was knocked unconscious, searched for money and then partially buried. Officials say Bravo wandered into the village the night of Oct. 22, 1999. He asked the boy and his adult cousin for a ride and offered to pay them. The boy and his cousin agreed, but they did not get far. The cousin threw Bravo to the ground and gagged him with a handkerchief. With his screams for help muffled, the boy hit Bravo numerous times in the face and neck with a large rock. A second adult helped the boy and cousin move and bury Bravo, officials say.
