A former member of the tribal council has been appointed acting executive officer until a permanent chairman is elected. Marvin Cook will oversee the tribe's daily business and serve as the contact between the council and tribal employees. He was appointed by Viva Peabody, acting tribal chairwoman. "We're just trying to get things back on track,'' Cook said. He was an opponent of former tribal Chairman John Baker Jr., ousted in a recall election in December. Cook has worked for the tribe for 19 years in various positions, including acting executive director in 1998 and in the energy division. Cook said he would consider serving as full-time executive officer if asked by the next chairman. Leonard Burch, a former chairman, faces Howard Richards Sr., a former council member, in a Feb. 9 special election for tribal leader.
