To the people of Oklahoma

First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Maya Torralba, and I am running as a Democrat for Oklahoma’s House District 56. Many of you knew my grandparents, John Bates and Agatha Paddlety Bates, who were lifelong residents of Anadarko. I am also a granddaughter of the late Jesse Torralba and Geraldine Torralba.

This year’s legislative session has seen fierce debate over the state budget. State budget cuts will be a hard hit to many of us in southwest Oklahoma. All of our people are already struggling to survive. Many towns are on the verge of dying due to the loss of infrastructure. These once vibrant communities are now riddled with crime and substance abuse. The unemployment rate has also been well above the state average for some time.

There are many questions that need to be answered by our state government. As I look around my community, I wonder if there will ever be anyone to help us find the answers. There is quite a bit of denial and apathy in our district. It seems we’ve become accustomed to asking our leaders how we should live. I believe it will take everyday citizens to fight for these answers, people like you and me. That’s why I’ve decided to run for state representative.

I am a member of the Kiowa Tribe, and a descendant of the Comanche Nation and Wichita and Affiliated Tribes. I’m also a mother of three, a wife, and an educator. I founded the Anadarko Community Esteem Project for young women. My work includes helping the community rebuild as we teach the next generation to build themselves. My husband is a professor at Comanche Nation College, and our three children attend Anadarko Public Schools.

I am by no means a politician – I am an Oklahoman. Our state has a unique history and many diverse cultures. There is so much to be celebrated and showcased in southwest Oklahoma, and I believe that we, as citizens of this great state, are the ones to rebuild our communities to be safe, sustainable and beautiful.

I hope to meet each and every one of you on the campaign trail this year. With your help, we can create solutions together. Feel free to contact me at (405) 933-2140 or
