When right winger T.J. Oshie was traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Washington Capitals earlier this month, no one was more devastated to learn about the deal than a 5-year-old St. Louis fan Libby Lu.
In a video that went viral after it was posted to YouTube, the little girl was crying while she screamed, ”T.J. Oshie left the team!” Her mother was shooting the video, and tried to calm her down as she hid in a closet, and seemed inconsolable.
Oshie, Ojibwe from Warroad, Minnesota, told WUSA9 how he felt when he learned about Libby’s meltdown. "It made me sad initially because you think about things you've accomplished over the years, my entire NHL career [was] in St Louis," Oshie said.
He later got a chance to talk to her over the phone during an interview that aired on SportsCenter. The young fan had one question: “Do you have a swimming pool?”
Oshie sent Libby some new Capitals gear.
Meanwhile, the Olympian – Oshie was hailed the hero of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games after scoring on four of six shootout attempts to lead the U.S. men's team past Russia, 3-2 -- is settling into the Washington, D.C. area with his fiancée and daughter. The Washington Post reported that the hockey standout is already being embraced by the fans. “This team’s ready to win,” Oshie told the paper while on a first-time visit to the team’s practice facility in Arlington. “…I’m happy to be an addition to that and be a piece to the puzzle.”
