Ticket Sales Spike for Schimmel’s Last Regular-Season Home Game

March 3 is the last time Shoni Schimmel will play a regular-season home game at KFC Yum! Center.

The University of Louisville senior guard is in her final year with the team, and so, the next time she plays it might be in the WNBA. Regardless of what Shoni decides to do, it’s an important moment for her and Indian Country as one of the most iconic Native women in sports may be closing the door on college basketball.

This moment is also a bit of a scramble for fans. Tickets sales are spiking.

According to The Courier Journal, Native Americans have purchased at least 1,540 tickets for the March 3 UConn game and are primarily responsible for U of L having sold tickets to fans in 38 states. More than 16,000 tickets have been sold for this Senior Night/Native American Appreciation Night game and there are only 22,000 seats in the arena. The school predicts it will be one of its largest home crowds ever.

“People are coming from literally everywhere to see Shoni and Jude play,” U of L assistant ticket manager Erika Aemmer told The Courier Journal. “There’s not many states we haven’t touched. They tell you when they call, ‘We are taking our vacation or spring break early to see them play.’”

Schimmel leads Division I women’s basketball with 79 3-point field goals and a 3.59-per game average. After the UConn game, Schimmel’s achievements on the court will likely be added to the list of U of L women who have scored 2,000 career points. She is the first female Cardinal player to exceed 1,000 points on 3-point shots.

The sisters left a note on their Facebook page promoting the event: “Next Monday, March 3rd, is Native American Day and Senior Night at the KFC Yum Center. $5 upper level tickets are all that are available now. Who is all going to Shoni's last regular season home game? #NativeAthlete #SchimmelSisters #Umatilla.”

So far, 735 people “liked” the post and according to the game’s event page, also on Facebook, 249 people are “going.”
