"Through Windows and Walls," by Peter Kater and R. Carlos Nakai

BOULDER, Colo. ? Peter Kater and R. Carlos Nakai's "Through Windows and Walls," is their seventh collaboration and their first wholly new composition in five years. It was released in 2001 by Silver Wave Records.

This album features nine tracks, with Kater performing piano, synthesizers and vocals while Nakai plays flute and eagle bone whistle and sings on "When Worlds Collide." David Darling adds his cello to "Remember When," and Jeffrey Gordon and Michael Moses Tirsh provide percussion for this moving and inspirational work. "Through Windows and Walls" has received a Native American Music Awards nomination for best new age recording.

Kater, born in Munich, Germany, began studying classical piano at age seven. This ? improbably ? led him to play rock-and-roll and top-40 hits in New York and New Jersey, then later to composing and recording in Boulder. He found the atmosphere in Colorado to be "a less external, more inspiring natural environment."

Nakai, a Navajo/Ute born in Flagstaff, Ariz., was classically trained on the coronet and trumpet; he began playing Native flute professionally in 1980. While working with an experimental group in the world music fusion genre, he was encouraged to use the flute to 'find his own voice.' Since then Nakai has been recorded on over 40 albums spanning every musical style from traditional Native American flute to jazz.

Kater and Nakai first began working together in the late '80s when Kater asked Nakai to record "Shaman's Call" for his 1989 Gaia Records (now Silver Wave) release "Homage." In 1990 Kater asked Nakai to collaborate on "Natives" which was a live improvisational album. The success and popularity of "Natives" quickly turned around a skeptical music industry and paved the way to the future of contemporary Native American music.

The duo's other recordings are "Migration," 1992, "How the West was Lost, Vol. 1," 1993, "Honorable Sky," 1994, "How the West was Lost, Vol. 2," 1995, "Improvisations in Concert," 1996 and their newest release "Songs for Humanity ? A Celebration of Ten Years" which is a greatest hits collection with two new tracks never before released.
