Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota

The tribe will receive bison removed from Theodore Roosevelt National Park during the annual roundup Oct. 30. The tribe will provide animals to other tribes and organizations. Park officials said the goal of the roundup was to thin about half the park's herd, estimated at 350 animals, to a size more suitable for available habitat and to prevent overgrazing. Two helicopters were used to drive the bison in the park's North Unit to a handling facility in the western section of the park. In 1962, the park service reestablished the bison herd in the North Unit with just 20 animals, officials said.
