The Smithsonian Collections Blog has posted a few pages from an interesting edition of the Christian Gospel According to Luke published in 1827. Bibles and prayer books were among the earliest materials translated into Native American languages, and as such remain essential documents for modern scholars. As a tribute to the Christmas holiday, the Smithsonian presents the Annunciation to the Shepherds scene from The Gospel According to St. Luke, translated into the Mohawk Tongue / Ne Tsinihhoweyea-Nenda-Onh Orighwa Do Geaty, Roghyadon Royadado Geaghty, Saint Luke.
