The former oil tycoon, clean energy advocate and New York Times best-selling author T. Boone Pickens will serve as the keynote speaker at the two-day Native American Finance Officers Association's Spring Finance Conference on March 22-23, held at the Pala Casino Spa & Resort in Pala, California. The Pala Band of Mission Indians is the tribal chair of the event.

The conference will address financial issues critical to tribal nations and their business enterprises, such as debt management, fostering economic development, tribal audits, investor relations, tribal bonds, risk management, tribal governance, and clean energy -- amongst other topics.

The Texas oil magnate is widely known for supporting the construction of wind turbines and solar panels on tribal lands, reported The Pickens Plan aims to reduce foreign oil dependence by harnessing domestic renewable energy resources.

The Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development champions a similar mission and helps tribes develop effective energy and mineral development strategies, assists them during Indian Mineral Development Act negotiations and provides technical data and interpretations for exploration and development of resources.

Pickens has also gained favor from President Barack Obama, who recently mentioned the billionaire in a White House news conference. "T. Boone Pickens, who made his fortune in the oil business -- and I don't think anybody would consider him unfriendly to drilling -- was right when he said that this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of," Obama said, reported The Dallas Morning News. "We can't place our long-term bets on a finite resource that we only control 2 percent of."

Replying on Twitter, Pickens thanked the president for the nod: "Pres. Obama, thx for plug. 1 point: US #oil demand down but #OPEC oil dependence/threat unchanged. Let's move on #natgas transportation."

Although he is more often than not lauded as a green energy environmentalist today, Pickens has also come under the microscope for his control of America's water. "He is now the largest individual water owner in America," reported The Telegraph.
