National Guard troops demolished a smokestack built at a former boarding school in St. Michael in the mid-1940s, to provide heat during North Dakota's cold winters. One of the builders, Cap Cavanaugh, said he and others worked 10 hours a day for 50 cents an hour. He was 18 when he helped build the plant in 1946. The school has been closed for more than 20 years and Guard First Sgt. James Gorres said the tribe was concerned about the safety of the cracked chimney. It was destroyed last month as a training exercise.
