The town of Ignacio has been awarded a $5,000 state grant to build a nature trail through Shoshone Park and along the Los Pinos River. Students from Ignacio High School will build the trail as part of an environmental science class, said trail coordinator Pat Senecal. It is part of a 20-year joint plan developed by Ignacio, La Plata County and the Southern Ute Tribe. The grant was one of 18 awarded across the state by Great Outdoors Colorado, which is funded by the Colorado Lottery. Private donations will be added to money from the town conservation fund to fulfill a required match for the project. "There are informal trails everywhere and we're following some of them and in other cases we're trying to protect against the informal trails, which either create erosion or disturbance to wildlife," she said.
